Vegan Dogs

My next challenge is to change all 4 of my dogs diets to vegan. I am on the last few servings of dog food so I figured I needed to wean them by mixing homemade meals with a little of their kibble. I have searched several times for vegan dog food recipes and I am not having much luck. I want a recipe that is healthy and yummy for the babies, but somewhat easy and inexpensive. Is that asking too much? Maybe.
I went with a recipe called "Texas Casserole."

Here is Zar and Jack scarfing it down.

Buddy and Emmy are loving it too!

Texas Casserole - with a few of my own changes
1 T Vegetable Oil
1 bag of frozen corn kernals
1 bag of frozen chopped green peppers
1 package of Veggie Grounds
1 can black beans (Next time I will use a whole bag of dried beans. More beans for less money)
black pepper
cumin
4 cups oatmeal
Add the first 7 ingredients into a skillet and cook until veggies are tender. Let cool. (I served my babies too soon. I felt bad but it was kinda funny to watch them try to eat it.)
Cook the oat meal according to package directions. Let cool.

I will not try to suggest how much to feed your dogs because I don't know myself. I fed my little ones 1/4 cup casserole, 1/2 cup oatmeal and 1/4 cup kibble = 1 cup twice a day. The big ones got 1/2 cup casserole, 1/2 cup oatmeal and 1/2 cup kibble = 1/5 cups twice a day.

I will keep a close eye on them to make sure they are happy and healthy and tweak my recipes as I go. Next recipe will be dog treats. Fun!

  1. I will try this.. what are Veggie Grounds made of?

As far as the puppies, watch for any skin irritation since they might need more fats in diet ;)

  2. Veggie Grounds is made of soy and wheat. Basically a ground beef substitute. No fat though. And don't worry, the puppies get plenty of peanut butter and other treats. And you know, Buddy could stand to lose a few lbs. I love my chunky boy.
